Oculus VR Glasses

This weeks post is something I came across while travelling to one of my company’s (Phybridge) partners, Internet2 in Ann Arbor Michigan. While at the office, I learned they had an Oculus Virtual Reality setup and I got a chance to have a test drive. For those of you who haven’t heard of this amazing solution, it is a true immersive 3D virtual reality experience and all I can say is WOW. If you get an opportunity to try this out, DO IT, it is amazing how real the experience is.

I got hooked up and sat in a standard office chair and the show started. I was immersed in what felt like an amazing new world that completely surrounded me. I traveled through space and almost brushed against planets and weird formations. I was in a cabin with a steaming turkey dinner behind me (and could almost smell the dinner on the table). Next I was on top of a sky-scraper in mid construction, sitting on a chair on a girder what seemed to be hundreds of feet up and then all of a sudden i was falling….

Everything seemed so real and felt that I could almost touch the objects around me. This was truly astounding.

On March 25, 2014, Facebook announced that it had agreed to buy Oculus VR for $400 million in cash, $1.6 billion in Facebook stock, and an additional $300 million subject to Oculus VR meeting certain financial targets in a transaction expected to close in the second quarter of 2014. No doubt there will be some really great applications for this solution as it evolves. Think about the possibilities…. Not just for gaming.
