My First VR Experience
While travelling to one of my company’s partners, Internet2 in Ann Arbor Michigan, I got a chance to test drive an Oculus Virtual Reality setup. For those who haven’t experienced true immersive 3D VR—all I can say is wow.
What Makes VR Different
This isn’t 3D movies or screens. VR puts you *inside* the experience. Look around and the world moves with you. Reach out and your virtual hands appear. It’s genuinely disorienting in the best way possible.
What VR is great for:
- ✅ Gaming that feels genuinely new
- ✅ Virtual travel and experiences
- ✅ Fitness that doesn’t feel like exercise
- ✅ Social experiences with distant friends/family
- ✅ Immersive learning and training
From Oculus to Meta Quest
VR has evolved significantly since my first test drive. The Meta Quest 3 is standalone (no PC required), wireless, and has hand tracking without controllers. The resolution and passthrough camera make it usable in mixed reality mode—seeing your real environment with digital overlays.
VR Fitness
One of the killer apps for VR is exercise. Games like Beat Saber, Supernatural, and boxing simulations make you sweat without feeling like you’re “working out.” For people who hate the gym, this is a game changer.
Bottom Line
VR has moved from novelty to practical. Whether for gaming, fitness, social connection, or just the wonder of being somewhere else—it’s a technology everyone should experience at least once.
