Shoes with Wheels—Still Cool After 25 Years
This week’s post is a little less high tech, but innovative just the same. My youngest son William told me he wanted HEELYS for his 11th birthday and I started to check out what the heck HEELYS were all about.
The Origin Story
In 1999, Roger Adams came up with the idea of putting a wheel in the sole of a shoe. The concept was simple: walk normally, then shift your weight and roll. Kids loved it, and Heelys became a cultural phenomenon.
Why kids (still) love them:
- ✅ Two shoes in one—walk or skate anytime
- ✅ The wheel is removable for regular shoe use
- ✅ Builds balance and coordination
- ✅ Fun way to get around
- ✅ Popular with kids and pre-teens
Practical Parent Notes
The wheel can be removed easily, turning them into normal shoes for school or situations where skating isn’t allowed. They’re built to handle the wear and tear kids put them through.
Safety Considerations
Yes, kids will fall. That’s part of learning. But Heelys are designed to be relatively safe—the wheel is in the heel, so kids naturally lean forward into a stable position when rolling. Helmets and pads are recommended for beginners.
Bottom Line
Not every innovation needs to be high-tech. Heelys solved a simple problem—how can shoes be more fun?—and created something that’s entertained kids for over two decades.
